The name (first name) that is printed on the card is different from what is stored at the national driver's license database (known as NEVDIS) as their legal name.

The NSW Roads agency used to allow people to have their 'preferred' name printed on their license without providing proof of their change of name (i.e. a marriage certificate or change of name certificate). This practice has now ceased but it is not being captured retrospectively i.e. the license will keep being renewed with the 'preferred' name printed on it. Some have had their license printed this way for at least 20 years, however, the DVS matches against what is stored as the 'legal name' at NEVDIS.

In order to have the 'legal' name updated in the database, the individual will need to provide proof of their change of name to an NSW road agency and request that they update the name recorded in NEVDIS.
